Scripture Sunday - The Art of Marriage Poem

Morning Sweet Friends,

Today will be a lil different... I am not

leaving you with a scripture but I am
leaving you with some scriptural
principles about marriage.

I happened to get a sales email from
Dayspring  this week, and they had a
plaque for sale and it was called
"The Art of Marriage"
and I thought the poem was really good...
and we will be discussing this in our
young marrieds class this Sunday, and
thought it would be great to share
it with you as well............

The man who wrote it Alferd Peterson,
was an American Author and was regarded
as "one of the best loved American writers
of the 20th century, and renowed for his
 inspirational wisdom and aphoristic wit".
(aphorism- a short phrase that expresses
a true or wise idea.....just in case you
never heard of it before....  I never had!)

The Art of Marriage Poem

Do you know what it takes to have a great marriage?
I think it’s safe to say that most of us who are married, or who have been married, find it challenging – or to have been a challenge. There is always something new to learn about yourself, your partner, communicating and just getting along. Wilferd A. Peterson, the author of the poem “The Art of Marriage,” was married to his wife for 58 years. Do you think maybe he learned some things from being married that long? I thought what he had to say was worth sharing. Read on.

“The Art Of Marriage”
Happiness in marriage is not something that just happens.
A good marriage must be created.

In the art of marriage the little things are the big things…

It is never being too old to hold hands.

It is remembering to say “I love you” at least once a day.

It is never going to sleep angry.

It is at no time taking the other for granted;
the courtship should not end with the honeymoon,

it should continue through all the years.

It is having a mutual sense of values and common objectives.

It is standing together facing the world.

It is forming a circle of love that gathers in the whole family.

It is doing things for each other, not in the attitude

of duty or sacrifice, but in the spirit of joy.

It is speaking words of appreciation

and demonstrating gratitude in thoughtful ways.

It is not looking for perfection in each other.
It is cultivating flexibility, patience, understanding
 and a sense of humor.

It is having the capacity to forgive and forget.

It is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow.

It is finding room for the things of the spirit.
It is a common search for the good and the beautiful.

It is establishing a relationship in which the independence is equal, dependence is mutual and the obligation is reciprocal.

It is not only marrying the right partner, it is being the right partner.

It is discovering what marriage can be, at its best.

Isn't this Lovely....
and Me thinks....it is a very good description of what
we all, who are married, should be aiming for in our marriages..............

What do you think???

Have a Blessed Sunday,

  1. I think the poem has covered all the aspects of a successful marriage, Nellie. Marriage is something we have to work on every day, no matter how long we have been married, because we are always going through different stages.
I think it is wonderful that you are working with these young couples, Nellie, goodness knows with times as they are I feel they need a lot of guidance in todays world.
    Have a blessed day.
    Blessings,
    Sue

  2. I'm so very joyful for those who have happy marriages! The Bible teaches Christians are blessed that are joined together in GOD. Mark 10:9 says, "Let no man put asunder." From the "other side of the coin," the Bible also teaches about those who have never been married and are true to the LORD. In I Corinthians 7:8-9, "Now to the unmarried and widows, I say, 'It is good for them to STAY unmarried as I am. But, if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.' " He follows in verses 34-35 with, "Being married, interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the LORD's affairs. Her aim is to be devoted to the LORD in BOTH BODY AND SPIRIT. But a married woman is concerned how she can please her husband. I (Paul) am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided devotion to the LORD." Whether married or unmarried, the LORD has had His plan for each person's life from before creation. Ephesians 1:4-5 not only speaks of salvation, but His plan for us as well. "He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight. In Love He predestined us to be adopted as His sons (and daughters) through Jesus Christ, in accordance with His pleasure and will." He chose us not only for salvation, but predestined us for the plan He has for each person. The LORD is all-knowing and knew everything about our lives before He created us. For us, hindsight is 20/20 and I can see where He guided me in every step of this life's pathway. My life verse is from Proverbs 3:5-6, "(I) Trust in You, LORD, with all my heart and I lean not to my own understanding. (I) Acknowledge You in all I do and YOU WILL DIRECT MY PATH." Earthly marriage is also a symbol of the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. Christ is the Groom and His Church is the Bride. In eternity there will be no marrying or giving in marriage. (Mark 12:25) Blessed be the Name of the LORD for those Christian marriages that are strong in the LORD and blessed are those never married who are also strong in the LORD! It will be worth it all when we see Jesus! Love you all, Susan

  4. Morning Sue,
Yes, I thought the poem covered all the aspects of marriage too....and we feel you can
never quit working on your marriage (well you can, but the results want be very good) lol
There is always something new to learn and like you say new phases to go through and new
things to work on.......no matter how long you are married. We will be having our 47
anniversary next Tuesday and we are still learning and growing.......

We really enjoy working with these young couples, some of them we have watched grow up
and now raising their own families, quite gratifying I have to say. They all seemed to
enjoy the poem too, but we only got 2 points done yesterday, but the discussion
    was great.........

Always great o hear from you and always appreciate your encouraging comments,
    Love and Blessings,
    Nellie
